Jewel Sommerville, Doctor of Acupuncture
Dr. Sommerville, founder of Holistic Health Rhode Island, received her degree from the New England School of Acupuncture, the oldest graduate school for the study of East Asian Medicine (EAM) in the United States. She is licensed to practice EAM in both Massachusetts and Rhode Island and earned the credential of Diplomate of Acupuncture from the National Certification Commission for Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine.
In addition to her 20 years clinical experience, Jewel worked in collaboration with Harvard Osher Institute to design and implement research studies which examined the effectiveness of EAM; she was credentialed and treated patients at Beth Israel Deaconess Hospital as part of a study examining the effectiveness of acupuncture with IBS.
Dr. Sommerville has served as part-time faculty at the New England School of Acupuncture and has taught at Brown University as part of an elective examining Complementary and Alternative Medicine (CAM). She was honored to be the Master of Ceremonies at NESA’s Women’s Health Research Symposium in 2011, has been twice nominated for the Rhode Island Small Business Journal’s “Entrepreneurial Women to Watch” Award, and often guest lectures on Women’s Health & Acupuncture Research. She has written numerous articles for publications throughout New England and presented on topics ranging from stress to complementary medicine's role in substance abuse recovery.
Dr. Jewel was granted hospital privileges at Women and Infants Hospital and South County Hospital to assist and attend in Labor and Delivery. In partnership with AdCare of North Kingstown, she worked to expand their Community Acupuncture offerings to address addictions treatment with an emphasis on the current opioid epidemic facing our communities. Most recently, she was named to the newly founded Rhode Island Department of Health Acupuncture Board.
Prior to her life as a Doctor of Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine, she received a Bachelor’s Degree in Clinical Psychology and worked in clinical and research settings for such prestigious hospitals as Johns Hopkins Hospital and Sheppard & Enoch Pratt Hospital in Maryland.
Dr. Sommerville believes the quality of care and the patient-practitioner relationship are of utmost importance. She combines her training in Japanese and Chinese acupuncture and Chinese Herbal Medicine to assess, diagnose and treat your condition.
